INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Come and work as an ASART volunteer in Costa Rica during everything between 2 weeks and 3 months! As an ASART volunteer you will learn about Costa Rican lifestyle, culture and traditions and you´ll get a chance to learn the Spanish language. You will also learn about our organization and its goals and our field of work.

We are looking for people who are interested in helping children in social risk to overcome the adversities of their lives. Students of Social Sciences (Social work, Sociology, Psychology and Anthropology), Fine arts, Music, Dance, Theater and Education are most likely to be interested in the program. Nevertheless everybody is welcome to join us, despite their age or field of study. We only request for committed people who can help our organization accomplish its goals.

We are an organization dedicated to help abused children in Central America.  We consider extreme poverty a social abuse. As a way of dealing with the problem we provide free art classes in schools and shelters.  Our main goal is to increase children’s self esteem.  Through the creative process we give them a sense of pride, discipline, leadership and team work.

Volunteers mainly help us give art courses to children in social risk.  We guide you with previous trainings and evaluating procedures to endure our work. Volunteers can also help us prepare fundraisings and collect art supplies in the community.  We don´t ask for any specific artistic knowledge.  Workshops are simple and fun.

We give trainings to our volunteers so that we can provide you with significant tools to use during your social work with the children.

THE LOCATION OF THE PROJECT: GUANACASTE IN COSTA RICA
Help the children in a warm town near the Beach on the Pacific Coast, surrounded by beautiful landscapes, exotic tropical birds and exciting waterfalls and rivers!

Guanacaste in Costa Rica, located between 8 and 11 degrees northern latitude has only two seasons; the rainy (May - Nov.) and the dry season (Dec - April).  According to the NASA, Costa Rica has the best climate of the world. Visions of never ending rain during the wet season are often exaggerated. Weather patterns are very local and in Guanacaste the sun shines always in the morning. The average temperature is 80.8°F and the annual rainfall is 59- 79 inches. The El Niño phenomenon, caused by the rapid increase of the water temperature in the Pacific Ocean also exists in Guanacaste, e.g. the rain declined around 28% during the year 2007 compared to the year before that. Due to its relatively dry climate through both seasons, Guanacaste has become the center of Costa Rican cattle breeding.

Guanacaste, with its capital Liberia, is the most northwestern province of Costa Rica, and borders west to the Pacific Ocean with a coastal length of 1022 km with fully developed tourism zones. Guanacaste has a total area of approximately 10,000 sq km and about 270,000 people of all kinds live there. The people have a completely different way of life which might be difficult to understand for foreigners, but it should always be taken seriously.

Guanacaste in Costa Rica is a safe region for travelers. The Control-Risks-Institute evaluated in their latest study for the year 2007 that there is low political risk and low security danger in Costa Rica.

ARRIVALS by the volunteers of this program may be at the Airport of Liberia in Guanacaste.
The airport in Liberia has a new terminal a little bit more north, where a group of investors announced that they would like to invest $15 million in the construction of a harbor for boats and yachts of all sizes: the Papagayo marina. The construction started in the beginning of January 2007.

TOURISM
We offer to organize tours for you such as water rafting, bird sightseeing, canopy, 4 runner, horseback riding, surf classes, visits to hot springs, volcanoes and other places.  Please let us know as soon as possible what you are interested in so that we can book your tour in advance!
